War veterans often prefer to keep scenes of battle to themselves. Perhaps late in life a combat veteran might share certain incidents. Ephraim and older brother Rufus Dawes were exceptions. They both recorded their “War of the Rebellion” experiences and sent them to the family for safekeeping. Each were brave leaders, and each were eloquent writers.
This book presents unedited transcriptions of original documentation from both Ephraim and Rufus Dawes in chronological order. Narration provides background and supplemental information, but primarily this book relates battle experiences of Ephraim and Rufus in their own words. There are many drama-filled events never before published and never before presented together. The sacrifices and patriotism exhibited by both young brothers is heroic and inspiring. The book also corrects the common misrepresentation of Rufus and late-war PTSD, as well as highlights the significant post-war accomplishments of both Rufus and Ephraim Dawes.
